Materuni Coffee Tour
Explore a traditional village, and learn how Tanzanian coffee is grown, roasted, and brewed ending with a fresh cup made by locals.
The Materuni Coffee Tour offers a rich, hands-on journey from bean to cup, guided by the Chagga people, who have cultivated coffee for generations. This experience invites visitors to connect deeply with local traditions while learning the true value of coffee in the community.
The tour begins with a scenic walk through lush coffee plantations, where Arabica plants thrive in fertile volcanic soil. Along the way, guides explain the full growth cycle, harvesting techniques, and the importance of coffee farming to local livelihoods. In harvest season, visitors can even pick ripe coffee cherries themselves.
After harvesting, guests take part in traditional processing methods, including de-pulping, fermenting, washing, and sun-drying the beans. A highlight of the tour is pounding the dried beans using wooden mortars while singing traditional Chagga songs—an energetic and joyful activity that brings everyone together.
The experience continues with roasting the beans over an open fire, releasing a rich, inviting aroma. Visitors then brew the coffee using simple local methods, enjoying a fresh and flavorful cup often considered among the finest in Tanzania, all while soaking in the peaceful village atmosphere.
The journey ends with a delicious traditional Chagga meal made from fresh, local ingredients. Dishes like machalari, ugali, mchicha, and mtori are served with warm hospitality, often outdoors with views of Mount Kilimanjaro, creating a memorable cultural experience that blends flavor, tradition, and connection.
